At present, the dynamics of the introduction of new renewable energy facilities in Ukraine from year to year remains positive - in 2017 their capacity was 257 MW, which is more than in the previous year for 2.1 times. Thus, in 2017, the total power of renewable energy sources in Ukraine increased by 23% - to almost 1375 MW.

The installed power of solar power plants in Ukraine in 2017 was 742 MW, which is 211 MW more than in the previous year. Due to the large number of sunny days and moderate air temperatures, solar stations installed in Ukraine are working as efficiently as possible.

Perspectives

According to the Energy Strategy for the period until 2035, the share of renewable energy in the production of electricity by 2020 should be 7%, and in 2025 - more than 13%. Renewable energy in Ukraine is important at the national level, but it also has international foundations: promoting energy security in Europe and combating climate change.

The average annual amount of total energy from solar irradiation in Ukraine ranges from 1,070 kilowatt hours (kWh)/m2 in northern regions to as much as 1400 kWh/m2 to the south, and higher in the Crimea peninsula. Solar PV equipment can be ef ciently operated throughout the year but the months of peak ef ciency are from April to October in southern regions and May to September in northern ones. Based on various studies, there is a 4 GW reasonable potential in Ukraine for solar power.

The use of alternative energy sources in Ukraine, mainly solar energy, is very promising. The average potential of solar power in Ukraine (1235 kW / h) is above average and higher than in Germany, the leading producer of solar energy in Europe (1000 kW / h). Below is a comparison of global horizontal radiation maps.

The energy system of Ukraine offers a number of commercial opportunities both for new construction and for reconstruction, taking into account outdated production capacities and expectations of increasing demand. Also, the growth of business projects for renewable energy sources. The National Renewable Energy Action Plan for the period up to 2020 and the long-term energy strategy of Ukraine are promising steps in planning and direction of targets that will accelerate the implementation of renewable energy sources in Ukraine.
