DTEK’s European subsidiary commissions a 126 MW solar power plant in Romania

Energy holding DTEK, owned by Rinat Akhmetov, has commissioned its third solar park in Romania through its European renewable energy arm, DRI

The new facility — the 126 MW Văcărești solar power plant — has already begun generating electricity, according to a statement published on the company’s official website.

The launch of the Văcărești park has significantly strengthened DRI’s presence in Romania’s renewable energy market. Over the past three years, the company’s green energy portfolio in the country has grown to nearly 300 MW. The new solar park is located in the village of Văcărești, Dâmbovița County, approximately 67 kilometers northwest of Bucharest.

According to company estimates, the power plant will generate enough clean electricity annually to supply around 50,000 households. In addition, its operation is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 48.6 thousand tonnes per year. The Văcărești project is a logical continuation of DRI’s asset development in Romania and complements the already operating Glodeni I and Glodeni II solar parks with a combined capacity of 113 MW, as well as the 60 MW Ruginoasa wind power plant.

Starting from January 2027, half of the electricity generated by the Văcărești solar park will be supplied to OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe. Deliveries will be made under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The deal, signed in December 2024, became the largest contract in Romania’s history for the supply of physical solar electricity under a PPA model.

The project was also supported by external financing. Earlier in 2025, DRI secured a non-recourse financing package of up to €60 million from UniCredit and Garanti BBVA. The funds were allocated to the construction and subsequent operation of the Văcărești solar park.

Overall, DRI continues to actively expand its renewable energy portfolio across Europe. The company currently has solar, wind, and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects with a total capacity of approximately 1.4 GW. These projects are at various stages of development and span key European markets.

As part of further business diversification, in March 2024 DRI also acquired a battery energy storage project near Kraków, Poland, underscoring the company’s strategic focus on developing modern energy solutions and infrastructure across Europe.
