Parliament extends moratorium on sale of land in Ukraine

The ban of sale of agricultural land will last until 1 January 2018

The corresponding document got 297 votes when 226 were required to pass a bill. The coalition members provided 167 votes.

Since 1993, there were several attempts to form a free market for agricultural lands in Ukraine. In 2001, the ban on sales of agricultural land was imposed.

The president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko asked the parliament to work out a frame for future land market of Ukraine. He believes that lifting a ban on sales of agricultural land may bring additional investments into Ukraine.

In March 2016, the government registered draft legislation on the future land market of Ukraine in the parliament. The law was drafted according to recommendations of the IMF.

The minister of agriculture of Ukraine Taras Kutovyi expected that a law on transfer of agricultural lands would be adopted in autumn to speed up the lift of moratorium.

But starting October 4, Ukrainian agribusiness launched an open-ended protest against lifting a ban on sales of agricultural lands.
