Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a new financial support package for Ukraine in the amount of US$5.5 billion during a the Global forum in Tokyo.
"Ukraine is still suffering from the Russian invasion, and its people need help to restore their daily lives and infrastructure, which was severely damaged by the Russian attacks," Fumio Kishida said.
The head of the Japanese government, who is the current president of the G7, added that he would hold an online summit of the Group of Seven countries on the anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also take part in the event.
Japan has joined the United States and European nations in sanctioning Russia over its invasion and providing humanitarian and economic support for Ukraine. Japan was quick to react because it fears a possible impact of the war in East Asia, where China’s military has grown increasingly assertive and has escalated tensions around self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.
We should remind that Japanese government is allocating US$170 million for Ukraine, which will be used for emergency recovery projects, including the repair of critical infrastructure.
