KNESS Commissions 140 MWh of Energy Storage Capacity with $40 Million Investment

Ukrainian energy group KNESS completed the construction of energy storage systems with a total capacity of 140 MWh in 2025, investing approximately $40 million in the projects

This was announced by KNESS co-founder and CEO Serhii Shakalov in a comment to Delo.ua as part of the special project “4 Years of Full-Scale War — 4 Lessons of Resilience.”

According to Shakalov, the facilities have been providing Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) and automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) services since October 2025 and rank among the largest energy storage complexes in Ukraine. The projects became possible following the company’s success in specialized auctions held in 2024, with financing secured through a combination of the company’s own funds, partner contributions, and bank financing.

Shakalov noted that since the start of the full-scale war, KNESS has managed to stabilize its business through effective risk management, improved governance models, and scenario planning based on optimistic, realistic, and pessimistic projections. At the same time, the company revised its business models, shifted focus within its product lines, and transformed its operations to accelerate entry into the European market.

KNESS has maintained its investment programs and developed new business models in the energy sector, including an approach under which the company acts as an investor in solar power plants (SPPs) or energy storage systems (ESS) to supply electricity to industrial enterprises. In addition, KNESS has implemented one of the largest portfolios of ESS projects aimed at supporting Ukraine’s power system.

The company has also launched an aggregated group for managing small-scale power assets, while other key business areas continue to expand actively both in Ukraine and internationally.

Founded in Ukraine in 2009, KNESS specializes in technology development and project implementation in renewable and conventional energy, including the production of mounting metal structures for photovoltaic modules exported to Europe. In 2021, KNESS entered the Polish market, and in 2023 it launched KNESS Baltic and began EPC-based solar power plant construction in Latvia. Within this segment, three solar plants with a total peak capacity of 16.4 MW have already been completed, generating clean energy.

KNESS Smart Power, part of the KNESS group, integrates electricity generation, consumption, and storage assets for electricity trading and the provision of balancing services in the market. The company is a licensed aggregator operating across all distribution system operator (DSO) territories in Ukraine.

Thus, in 2025, KNESS not only significantly expanded its energy storage capacity in Ukraine but also strengthened its position in international markets by implementing innovative investment and energy project management models.
