Teofipolska Energy Company Launches New Biomethane Plant in Ukraine

A new biomethane plant has started operations in Ukraine, significantly increasing the country’s production capacity for this type of fuel. The facility was launched by Teofipolska Energy Company, and its commissioning has effectively doubled Ukraine’s total biomethane production potential. This was reported by the Chairman of the Board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Heorhii Heletukha.

According to him, there are currently six biomethane producers operating in Ukraine, with the newly launched plant being the latest addition, having started operations this month. The combined capacity of all active facilities is approximately 106 million cubic meters of biomethane per year.

As early as the end of 2025, Heletukha noted that the Teofipolska Energy Company plant would be capable of producing 56 million cubic meters of biomethane annually. The project is considered the largest in the sector and is distinguished by its direct connection to the gas transmission system, rather than to gas distribution networks, as is the case with most similar facilities.

It is also expected that another — the seventh — biomethane plant will be launched in Ukraine during the current year.

Currently, out of the six operating facilities, four inject biomethane into gas pipelines:

  • three facilities supply gas to distribution networks,
  • one supplies directly to the gas transmission system.

The remaining two plants produce bio-LNG — liquefied biomethane — which is transported in specialized cryogenic tanks.

All biomethane produced in Ukraine is certified under the ISCC EU system, recognized by the European Commission. This opens up opportunities for potential exports to the European market.

Despite the launch of new facilities, production volumes remain relatively modest. The total capacity of the sector is around 0.1 billion cubic meters per year, while Ukraine’s domestic gas consumption reaches approximately 20 billion cubic meters annually.

Prior to the full-scale war, Ukraine had ambitious plans to develop the sector. The country aimed to produce:

  • 1 billion cubic meters of biomethane by 2030,
  • 4.5 billion cubic meters by 2040,
  • up to 20 billion cubic meters by 2050.

Such production levels could theoretically fully cover Ukraine’s current natural gas demand.

According to estimates by the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, achieving production of 20 billion cubic meters annually would require around 4,000 biomethane plants across the country. These facilities can be developed alongside agricultural companies with significant volumes of organic waste.

Realizing this potential would require approximately €40 billion in investments but could generate substantial environmental and economic benefits. In particular, it could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 million tons of CO₂ annually and create up to 250,000 jobs.
