Ukrainian industrial group Vitagro and Denmark’s pig genetics leader DanBred are jointly investing approximately $11 million in the construction of a pedigree pig breeding farm in western Ukraine. The new facility in the Khmelnytskyi region will specialize in Yorkshire, Duroc, and Landrace breeds, as well as hybrids and Duroc boars.
The farm will accommodate 1,000 sows, enabling the production of up to 9,000 piglets and 250 boars annually. Initial livestock deliveries have already commenced, with the third batch expected by the end of June 2025. The first litters are projected in November–December 2025, with sales on the Ukrainian market slated to begin in 2026.
The breeding center is expected to reduce Ukrainian farmers’ dependence on live pig imports from Denmark, which involve complex logistics, customs clearance, and transport costs of up to €15,000 per vehicle.
