South Korea may become new major investor of Ukraine

In Q4/2015, South Korea invested a record amount of USD 7.6bn into other countries

An expert of Foreign Policy Council of 'Ukrainian Prizm' Mr. Ivan Us believes that Ukraine's PM Volodymyr Groysman has made a positive move in foreign relations by proposing potential partners from the South Korean companies to increase investments into Ukraine.

The very fact that the South Korean companies are seriously increasing investments into other countries proves their power of investing overseas. Being said, South Korea invested a record amount of USD 7.6bn into other countries in Q4/2015.

The expert's concern is about the other side of the issue, that is, whether Ukraine is capable of taking the investments. Our government should, first and foremost, make efforts to improve the investment climate and restore investor confidence in the Ukrainian economy. History of previous investments is one of the key factors influencing the climate. Unfortunately, there is no such a positive precedent to showcase stable relationships with South Korea. In such circumstances, the state has to demonstrate readiness to complying and providing guarantees for the investors. At the same time, South Korean investors have to constantly feel the positive attitude on the part of the Ukrainian authorities.

The positive message being sent was a decision to replace Russian satellite TV channels with South Korean ones. At this, the memorandum has been signed on the erection of the biomass power plant in Ukraine by the South Korean company.

In this respect, moving from words to concrete actions is the most important part, says Ivan Us.
