MHP Invests in Alternative Protein: 400 Tonnes of Insect Protein and 100,000 Tonnes of Waste Processing by 2030

One of Ukraine’s largest agricultural holdings, MHP, plans to increase insect-based protein production to 400 tonnes per year under its 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy

MHP, one of Ukraine’s largest agroholdings, plans to scale up insect-based protein production to 400 tonnes annually and increase food and organic waste processing capacity to 100,000 tonnes per year as part of its 2030 Sustainable Development Strategy.

These targets are defined as key milestones in advancing a circular economy model and reducing the company’s carbon footprint.

The company is preparing to launch a production line for:

  • insect-based protein additives for pet food;
  • feed components for livestock farming;
  • and, prospectively, ingredients for aquaculture.

In December 2025, MHP announced preparations to launch its first industrial pilot facility for alternative protein production by the end of Q1 2026. The project involves scaling a technology based on processing organic waste using insect larvae (likely Black Soldier Fly), a globally recognized standard in this segment.

The target output is 400 tonnes of protein per year by 2030.

Alternative protein forms part of the broader “MHP Recycling” ecosystem, which предусматривает:

  • creation of a central hub for rapid food waste processing;
  • development of a regional network of collection centers;
  • implementation of a digital monitoring platform;
  • achieving a model of full processing or reuse of organic waste.

By 2030, the company aims to reach waste processing capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year.

The global insect protein market is experiencing rapid growth driven by:

  • shortages of traditional feed proteins (soy, fishmeal);
  • increasing ESG requirements;
  • decarbonization of agricultural and food supply chains;
  • expansion of the premium pet food segment.

The European market actively subsidizes such initiatives under the Green Deal and circular economy programs.

The average price of insect protein in Europe ranges from €2,000 to €4,000 per tonne depending on quality and market segment.

At a production level of 400 tonnes per year, potential revenue from protein alone could reach €0.8–1.6 million annually.

Additional revenue streams may include: waste processing (cost savings on disposal), production of organic fertilizers, potential access to green loans or grants, and future monetization of carbon reductions.
