Yuzefо-Mykolaivka Biogas Company LLC plans a large-scale expansion of its biogas complex in Ukraine’s Vinnytsia region, which is expected to approximately double the facility’s production capacity to 8,000 m³ of biogas per hour, or around 72 million m³ per year. UTC will implement the project to build the second phase of the facility. A notification of the planned activity has already been published in Ukraine’s Unified Environmental Impact Assessment Register.
The expansion will involve increasing the capacity of the existing bioenergy complex and installing additional equipment at the industrial site in the village of Shyroka Hreblia, Khmilnyk district, Vinnytsia region. Following reconstruction, the facility will be able to process significantly larger volumes of organic feedstock and produce not only biogas, but also biomethane, commercial-grade carbon dioxide, electricity, heat and organic fertilizers.
The Yuzefо-Mykolaivka biogas complex has been operating alongside the Yuzefо-Mykolaivka sugar plant since November 2019. Its design is based on the waste-free anaerobic digestion technology developed by Dutch company ADVERIO, while pre-project methanation testing was carried out by Netherlands-based Opure.
Construction of the complex took approximately 18 months. A significant share of the equipment was manufactured directly in Ukraine: more than 60% of the equipment — including reactors, mixers, heat exchangers, conveyors, screw systems, dewatering units, flotation units, scrubbers, flares and boilers — was produced under license at KEMP, UTC’s manufacturing division.
The existing complex currently processes around 85 tonnes of sugar beet pulp and 115 tonnes of silage per day. The facility operates around the clock, 365 days a year. Its current biogas production capacity is approximately 1,350 m³ per hour, installed electrical capacity stands at 3.2 MW, while dry cake output reaches around 40 tonnes per day.
The new project envisages the construction of an additional reactor unit and other process equipment. Following reconstruction, the complex’s total biogas production capacity is expected to approximately double.
The company plans to process up to 1,500 tonnes of non-hazardous organic waste per day. Feedstock will include various types of agricultural and food-processing waste, such as sugar beet pulp, poultry manure, beet tops and tails, green crop silage, molasses, fats, apple pomace and other organic materials.
The processing operations are expected to produce around 35 million m³ of biomethane, 30 million m³ of commercial-grade carbon dioxide, 45,000 MWh of electricity and 550 Gcal of thermal energy annually. The facility will also produce substantial volumes of organic fertilizers — approximately 95,000 tonnes of solid organic fertilizer, or cake, and 480,000 tonnes of liquid organic fertilizer, or digestate, per year.
Biogas will be produced through anaerobic digestion of organic feedstock. After purification, the gas is planned to be used across several applications, including electricity and heat generation, biomethane production and the recovery of commercial-grade CO₂. This approach will enable the complex to operate simultaneously as an organic waste processing facility and a producer of renewable energy and higher-value products.
The production of biomethane and carbon dioxide will include further downstream processing. According to the project, biomethane and CO₂ are expected to be supplied to YM Liquid Gas LLC for subsequent liquefaction.
The project is planned to be implemented in three phases. The first phase will include the construction of a 10,000 m³ digester, an additional 5,000 m³ tank, unloading pits, a feedstock storage facility, process overpasses, a machinery hall and biomass preparation equipment.
The second phase will include the installation of a flare for burning excess biogas, a loading table, biogas desulfurization systems, an amine treatment and biomethane separation unit, an electrical switchboard facility and a dewatering unit.
The third phase will involve the construction of another 10,000 m³ digester, a process overpass, a biomass preparation unit and additional unloading pits.
YM Liquid Gas is a potential project partner for the further processing of biomethane and CO₂. In September 2025, the company exported Ukraine-produced liquefied biomethane — bio-LNG — for the first time. It became the second Ukrainian company to begin exporting bio-LNG and the fourth company in the country to export biomethane.
The expansion of the Yuzefо-Mykolaivka complex is part of a broader trend in the development of bioenergy and biomethane production in Ukraine. In May 2026 alone, several plans for new bioenergy facilities in the Ternopil, Vinnytsia and Rivne regions were announced.
In particular, a biomethane plant project in the Ternopil region is being developed by Sokolov Energy LLC, part of the OKKO Group. In the Vinnytsia region, a similar bioenergy complex is planned by UPI-Energy, part of Ukrprominvest-Agro, the agribusiness group associated with the Poroshenko family. Another project in the Dubno district of the Rivne region envisages the production of biomethane and electricity by a company belonging to the Tekhnolohiia Group.
