DTEK Plans Up to UAH 24 Billion in Power Grid Investment Over Five Years

DTEK Grids’ distribution system operators have prepared five-year power grid development plans for Kyiv and the Kyiv, Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The total planned investment could reach UAH 24 billion.

To determine priority areas, the company used digital twins of power grids — virtual models of real energy infrastructure that allow the performance of the system to be assessed under various scenarios.

The modelling takes into account projected changes in electricity consumption, connections of new customers, the development of renewable and distributed generation, as well as the technical condition of the networks. This makes it possible to identify potentially problematic sections of the grid in advance and compare different modernization options.

According to DTEK Grids Chief Operating Officer Sharunas Kirlis, digital modelling allows the company to assess the effectiveness of planned solutions before their implementation begins. In particular, specialists can forecast how the grid will operate following reconstruction or changes to power supply configurations and determine which projects should be prioritized.

The funds envisaged under the five-year plans are expected to be allocated to the construction of new substations and power lines, reconstruction and modernization of existing energy infrastructure, grid automation, and the installation of smart electricity meters.

DTEK Grids operates in five regions of Ukraine — Kyiv and the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Odesa regions. The company serves approximately 5.1 million households and 150,000 businesses.
