State-owned company Ukrhydroenergo is preparing new investment projects in renewable energy and electricity storage. In particular, the company plans to build a 150 MW wind power plant and implement a large-scale project to install energy storage systems with a total capacity of 200 MW at its facilities.
This was reported by the company’s CEO Bohdan Sukhetskyi in the “Hovory po dilu” podcast on YouTube.
According to him, the battery storage project is already at the tender stage. The energy storage systems are planned to be installed at all of the company’s power plants, which will make it possible to increase the flexibility of the power system and improve the efficiency of using generation capacity.
In addition, Ukrhydroenergo is preparing a 150 MW wind generation project for implementation. The company is considering placing wind turbines at the sites of its hydropower plants, creating multifunctional energy hubs on their basis.
At the same time, the company has temporarily paused the development of solar energy. A project related to hydrogen production has also been postponed. The company’s management explains this by increased wartime risks and safety requirements related to the use of hydrogen.
According to Sukhetskyi, in the future the company’s hydropower plants should become centres of energy clusters that will combine different types of generation and necessarily include energy storage systems. The company is already analysing which facilities would be suitable for wind turbine placement.
In the long term, Ukrhydroenergo’s management is also considering the possibility of integrating hydropower with small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). According to Sukhetskyi, the infrastructure of hydropower plants has the necessary conditions for the placement of such facilities, including cooling systems, energy sites and the ability to feed capacity into the grid.
Ukrhydroenergo is Ukraine’s largest hydropower generation company and operates hydropower plants and pumped storage power plants on the Dnipro and Dniester rivers. The company is 100% state-owned. In 2025, Ukrhydroenergo became the most profitable company in Ukraine.
