Germany will allocate an additional €250 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, bringing its total financial contribution to €807 million. The funds are intended to strengthen the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system amid ongoing Russian attacks and preparations for the upcoming heating season.

The additional contribution was announced by Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal. He thanked the German government and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche for the decision to increase financial support for Ukraine’s energy sector.

According to Shmyhal, the additional funding is particularly important ahead of winter, when pressure on the energy system traditionally increases and Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continues to face Russian missile and drone attacks.

Germany remains the largest donor to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. With the new €250 million contribution, the country’s total funding for the fund will reach €807 million.

Overall, international partners have already transferred more than €2.4 billion to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. These funds are used to finance the purchase of equipment and the works required to restore and maintain the operation of energy infrastructure.

Despite the significant volume of international assistance, the needs of Ukrainian energy companies remain high. Russian attacks regularly damage electricity generation, transmission and distribution facilities, creating additional costs for repairs, restoration and the establishment of equipment reserves.

Shmyhal noted that Ukraine still needs to raise another €561.5 million for the fund to cover the current needs of the energy sector. Kyiv is counting on further financial support from international partners.

Thus, following the new German contribution, the fund has accumulated a substantial amount of international financing, but Ukraine still requires additional resources to prepare the energy system for the winter period and maintain its operation amid ongoing attacks.
