2024 marks another year of growth for the world's richest people.
The fortunes of the world's richest people continued to rise in 2024 as global stock markets weathered military tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East, political unrest, and lingering inflation.
There are even more billionaires in 2025: 2,983 in total, 153 more than in 2024. They are richer than ever, with a combined net worth of $14.2 trillion, up $2 trillion from 2024. Two-thirds of the 2025 Forbes list are wealthier than they were a year ago, and only one-quarter are poorer.
Most of the wealth gains came from the top 20, which increased their combined wealth by 23%, or $670 million billion, over the year.
The richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has increased his wealth to a record high, from $250 billion to $430 billion as of early 2025. Elon Musk's wealth has increased by 66% since Donald Trump won the US presidential election.
Elon Musk has effectively become Trump's right-hand man, attending the president-elect's phone calls with foreign leaders, giving his opinion on future appointments, and exerting significant influence on Republican legislators.
The latest news was an insider sale of shares in his private company SpaceX at a valuation of $350 billion, as a result of which Musk's net worth has sharply increased by about $50 billion to $439.2 billion.
