Energoatom and Ukrgasbank to create a national chain of electric charging stations in Ukraine

The national chain of electric charging stations in Ukraine will be developed thanks to the financing of Ukrgasbank and the energy capabilities of NNEGC Energoatom.

The national nuclear power generating company Energoatom and the state-owned Ukrgasbank have signed a memorandum on joint implementation of the project – development of a national network of charging stations for electric vehicles.

The project envisages the use of Ukrgasbank’s financial capabilities and Energoatom’s production and technical potential as the largest producer of electricity in Ukraine to create the extensive network of charging stations for electric vehicles. The project should also help Ukraine meet its international commitments on decarbonization by accelerating the achievement of carbon neutrality in Ukraine’s economy, as well as reducing the environmental pollution.

Regarding the demand for charging stations for electric vehicles in Ukraine: as of June 1, 2022, 36,602 electric cars were registered in Ukraine, in May their number increased by 1,016 cars, which was the best result since the beginning of the year and 63% more than a year ago. Moreover, on 31 May, 2022, Energoatom received a loan of UAH 1.5 billion from Ukrgasbank. These funds are used to purchase fresh nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse in 2022. As is known, Energoatom at the beginning of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine refused Russian nuclear fuel and announced its replacement with the American one. The attracted credit funds will increase the procurement of American fuel and ensure the effective operation of the power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants after the abandonment of Russian nuclear fuel.
